About us
We are a Laboratory of practices for local journalism in service of the public dedicated to finding ways to build and maintain sustainability, autonomy, and engagement of local journalism initiatives that provide public interest information to their communities. To achieve this, we build and engage in research projects that aim to diagnose local situations and needs in the realm of journalistic information provision; and on the other hand, in laboratory projects focused on experimenting with languages, formats, practices, and models (for fundraising and use of resources, production and circulation of information) that can ensure this provision adequately.
We are interested in thinking about and building models and practices for journalism that are centered on information as a common good and on strengthening democracy, considering journalism as a non-state public service. To achieve this goal, we discuss issues related to transparency, working conditions, diversity, and management possibilities of journalistic organizations, and we understand that rethinking journalism’s place in society and its potential to strengthen community building depends on a reflective movement about the central values of the profession and its constitution as a political technology.
Our group is located in Florianópolis (SC), and this is the location for which our research and activities are designed, but we aim to find replicable models to meet the needs and characteristics of different locations. We understand research as a collective effort that depends on forming research networks and collaborative projects.
LocalJor is a research group linked to the Graduate Program in Journalism (PPGJOR) and the Graduate Program in Sociology and Political Science (PPGSP) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, based in Florianópolis.
