GPSJor
GPSJor was an action-research project created in 2016 with the aim of researching and proposing solutions for contemporary journalism crises. The initiative wanted to contribute to building independent and quality local journalistic media that would be self-sustainable and have a more social governance model. The research was based on the belief that journalism can be produced not only by companies but also by other organizations, including non-profit ones. It is understood that the public can and should participate in many of the daily decisions of this journalism, and can also finance it without intermediaries. This was called social governance.
The laboratory was in Joinville, Santa Catarina’s largest city, with a robust and vibrant economy and great regional influence. The city also has a notable history in Santa Catarina media and a recognized higher education course in journalism. These reasons led to Joinville being chosen to study the conditions for this pilot experience called New Type Journalism. For this, some concepts were developed through a complex and dynamic methodology, combining various research techniques.
GPSJor was a joint initiative of the Graduate Programs in Journalism (PPGJOR) and Political Sociology (PGSP) at UFSC, the Journalism course at Ielusc College, and the Master’s in Journalism at UEPG.
The initiative received logistical and strategic support from various organizations, and public funding from CNPq’s Universal Call 2016. This funding agency granted a technical support scholarship for a period of 35 months and R$ 41,804.00 for research maintenance, totaling R$ 61,604.00.
Ielusc covered the payment for dedicated hours of one of the team’s researchers. Hupoo and the Santa Catarina Journalists Union provided specific support during some stages of the investigation.
The research was completed in May 2020. For more information about GPSJor, click here.
